XQuery’s Real Potential: Transforming Application Development

Oracle’s Daniela Florescu gave a talk at UC Irvine this May entitled The Magic Is In The Glue: XQuery + Cloud. A coworker pointed me to the slides here , which I thought I’d share in a more convenient SlideShare-based format and agree with violently in more than a few respects. First, let’s excerpt the abstract to tee things up: Ten years have passed since the W3C initiated its effort to design a query language for what, in 1999, was a new and controversial semi-structured data format, namely XML

Stonebraker: Send Relational DBMSs to the Home for Tired Software

Mike Stonebraker spoke today at SIGMOD (see Tweetstream ) where, among other things there was a 40-year anniversary celebration of the relational DBMS and, in what I suspect is non-coincidental timing, Mike did a post on the CACM site entitled The End of a DBMS Era (Might be Upon Us) . Excerpt: Moreover, the code line from all of the major vendors is quite elderly, in all cases dating from the 1980s.

How Can SOA and Cloud Computing affect the world of C++?

This question was posed recently in an online group discussion, and I thought it was an interesting topic – so here is the response that I posted: WOA/SOA can fit with C++ and be used to combine the agility benefits of SOA with the performance and control that C++ offers.  However, there are several things to consider.  These may not all apply to your project, depending on your business and technical requirements. 1.

Emerging Enterprise Content Management Trends

I was at the Gilbane Conference in San Francisco last week, where I answered questions as a panelist, moderated another panel, heard many excellent presentations, and joined in many engaging discussions. On the plane ride home, I took some time to piece together the individual bits of information and opinion that I had absorbed during the two-day event. This reflection led to the following observations regarding the state of enterprise content management practices and technologies.

Standards-Based Interoperability

There has been quite a bit of discussion lately in the blogosphere about various approaches to document format interoperability.  It’s great to see all of the interest in this topic, and in this post I’d like to outline how we look at interoperability and standards on the Office team.  Our approach is based on a few simple concepts: Interoperability is best enabled by a multi-pronged approach based on open standards, proactive maintenance of standards, transparency of implementation, and a collaborative approach to interoperability testing.

SOA Expressway Provides IHE On-Ramp at HIMSS Interoperability Showcase

In a previous post , I stated that Intel’s SOA Expressway for Healthcare (Expressway) passed IHE Connectathon testing. This was accomplished by constructing workflows that encapsulate the requirements (transformations, transactions, etc.) necessary for various IHE profiles. These IHE Workflows, now packaged within Expressway, provide an IHE on-ramp/off-ramp for applications and systems either lacking or needing additional infrastructure to accommodate IHE interoperability

Balance of interest ~= Broader representation [Updated]

So a particular phrase in the US Federal Participation in the Development and Use of Voluntary Consensus Standards and in Conformity Assessment Activities stood out: a voluntary consensus standards body needs to have a balance of interest. This balance of interest can only come out of broad representation: indeed, they are two sides of the same coin. Openness gives the potential for a balance of interest, but it does not guarantee it.
